Did you know that blessing your baby’s spirit in the womb is one of the most powerful things you can do during your pregnancy?
I’ve been meaning to write about this for a while for now, and remembered it again today when I read this Scripture:
“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.” Luke 1:41-44
As I read this Scripture today, I was reminded that even in the womb, our babies’ spirits are alive and active and present to the things of God. Their bodies and their minds are still be developing, but their spirits are already full formed and are able to give and receive the things of God. I love that!
I love that at 6 months gestation, the spirit of John the Baptist recognized the spirit of Jesus near him and made him leap for joy in Elizabeth’s womb. Wow! His lungs, brain, and organs weren’t fully developed, but his spirit was – the eternal part of him that came from heaven and will live in heaven for all eternity – and that spirit felt great joy in the presence of Jesus.
And when his spirit responded in joy to Jesus, his mother was then filled with the Holy Spirit. So cool! Babies can minster to our spirits even from the womb.
I saw this so clearly when I was pregnant with our first son. We knew that he carried laughter from Heaven (it was one of the things God had spoken over him) and it always amazed me how often laughter would hit people who touched my belly. The joy he carried in the womb was contagious and it often spread to people who were touching my belly and praying for him or talking to him.
So today I want to encourage you to nurture your baby’s beautiful spirit!
Blessing your baby’s spirit while they are in the womb can have a powerful effect on your pregnancy, birth, and your baby’s temperament once they are born. So start blessing your baby’s spirit with joy, peace, an intimate knowledge of God’s voice, security in His love, and anything else God puts on your heart.
Studies show that baby’s whose parents consistently nurtured their spirits in the womb tend to be more peaceful, joyful babies who show a strong sensitivity to the Holy Spirit at an early age. (“Pure Joy” by Wade & Burk).
So cool!
I first learned about the power of blessing your baby’s spirit from a study that Arther Burk did on turning breech babies. He found that babies who were breech near their due date had a significantly higher rate of turning if their parents had blessed the baby’s spirits during the pregnancy and then spoke to their spirit and told them it was time to turn head down and get ready for birth. It was like their spirit that had been nurtured and connecting to the parent throughout the pregnancy responded very easily to the direction to turn. So fascinating!
If you’re interested in learning how to intentionally nurture and bless your baby’s spirit, I highly recommend the book “Pure Joy!” It provides lots of great examples of how to bless your baby’s spirit and gives you blessings and scriptures to pray over your baby that can then get you into the habit so that you’re inspired to pray your own blessings over them throughout the day.
It’s called “Pure Joy” because the blessings in it are specifically designed to increase your baby’s capacity for joy, which I think is awesome! I mean, who wouldn’t want a more joyful kid?
(And the blessings aren’t just for babies in the womb – they are great for anyone. I’ve been praying them over my 3-year-and old and 1-year-old before bed at night and it’s been so special. My 3-year-old really enjoys them and I can tell his spirit is receiving from them. He just lays there with a big smile on his face as I speak life and truth over him.)
Which reminds me – one other great way to bless your baby’s spirit with truth (whether in the womb or outside the womb) is with my Mommy-Baby Soaking Album. It’s an entire album of life-giving scriptures to peaceful background music.
While you’re pregnant, you can play it while you fall asleep at night and let the peaceful Scriptures bless and nurture your baby’s spirit. Or if your baby is already born, play it while she sleeps, plays, nurses, or cuddles with you on the couch and let her spirit soak up God’s life-giving words at an early age!
I often play this album while my kids sleep (and while I sleep too). And sometimes I play it in the background while they play – especially if they are having a rough day – I will put it on in the room and bless their spirits to receive the life and truth in the words while they play.
You can check out the album here.
Bless you amazing mamas! This is such holy work we’ve been given to care for these precious gifts in our wombs and homes. As we nurture them physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, we are partaking in one of the most eternal and sacred missions God will ever give us.
I bless your spirit today to know how loved and amazing you are and how sacred your work of motherhood is. And I bless your baby’s spirit to know how loved he or she is and with overflowing joy and peace!
Lots of Love,
Kierra
