I recently returned from my mother-in-law’s memorial service and WOW, what an incredible mom she was! Mom to nine biological kids, plus all the neighborhood kids and lots of women in her church, she somehow always had time for everyone, always had a song in her heart and on her lips, kept her laughter and spunk (even up to age 86), and provided a safe place for everyone to share the deep things on their hearts. As we shared stories, laughed, sang, and cried celebrating this beautiful woman and mother, I couldn’t help but ask myself, “What kind of mom do I want to be?”
I will share my answer below, but first I want to ask you the same question. What kind of mom do YOU want to be? NOW is the time to start thinking about it because motherhood starts now – with your precious baby still snug in your womb. Even in the womb, babies sense your emotions and hear your words and they are already learning from you as their mom. Is the world outside a safe, fun, joyful place? Or a scary, stressful place? Should they look forward to their birth, or be nervous about it?
This is your chance to start shining as the beautiful mom you want to be. Do you want to be a mom who laughs or worries throughout the day? Who makes decisions regarding the birth out of love or fear? Who makes mental and verbal agreements with God’s promises or the devil’s lies? Who speaks words of life or criticism? Your beautiful journey of motherhood has begun and you get to decide the kind of mom you want to be!
For me, I’ve decided I want to be a mom who:
- Makes decisions out of wisdom and love and instead of fear
- Is lighthearted and fun
- Sings throughout the day
- Creates an atmosphere of worship in our home
- Chooses to worry with God instead of without God (here’s my blog entry on what this looks like)
- Laughs at the days to come with no fear of the future (Proverbs 31:25)
- Lets God, not “needs” dictate the pace I live life
- Makes time to sit, chat, listen, and play with my kids
- Creates space in my week for “God-time,” “me time” and exercise so I can be the best mom possible
- Continues to date and cherish my husband – falling deeper in love with him each year
- Speaks life and destiny over my kids & husband – calling them up into who they really are
So there’s my current list in progress! Thanks Mom Blaser for the beautiful legacy of motherhood you left behind and for inspiring me to greater intentionality in the way I mother! Love you forever!
Now it’s your turn to make your list and to start living it! Pregnancy is the perfect time to start, for truly, your journey of motherhood has already begun.
Go shine,
Kierra
